Spring Valley Is a Charming Town in San Diego County
Spring Valley is an unincorporated community of San Diego County, California. Spring Valley includes the neighborhoods of Alpine, Jamacha - Cuchilla, Lomita, and part of the neighborhood of Spring Valley, which is in La Mesa. Spring Valley stretches from El Cajon to Lakeside and Scripps Ranch and many north county communities such as Jamul, Spring Valley, and Rancho San Diego. Spring Valley is one of the most rural and remote areas of eastern San Diego County.
Spring Valley was given its name because of a natural spring found there. It had been the home of the Kumeyaay people for a long time, and they called it Neti or Meti. Native Americans were driven away by Spanish invaders, who renamed El Aguaje de San Jorge (St. George's Spring) and exploited it for cattle grazing.
When the spring was discovered in 1863, Judge Augustus S. Ensworth of San Diego submitted a claim for a 160-acre (65-hectare) ranch that encompassed it. The farm and the little adobe house he had built on it were sold to Rufus King Porter, who eventually sold it to historian Hubert Howe Bancroft for a sum of money. The adobe has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.
